Project Requirements

Overview: Your goal is to be able to bring a historical figure to life in our town meeting and to accurately represent his or her position on our key questions. To do this, you will need to learn more about the background of your particular individual, the historical context in which he or she was operating, and his or her particular movement or organization. For example, if you are researching General Westmoreland, you need to know about the changing status of the Vietnam War between 1965 and 1968. Your grade will be based on the following:

I. Research Notes (20%): You will need to do some research to find out more about your individual. This research will involve primary and secondary sources. You MUST keep track of your sources--and make the sources of your information clear in your notes.

II. Profile (35%): Your profile will take the place of the biography and opening statement you wrote last year. We'll decide on the format in class. You will post your profile on this wikispace. The profile should include the following information:
  • Key background information on your individual. This information should help us understand his or her perspective.
Pay particular attention to any changes that might have occurred in your individual's thinking on issues like civil rights, the war in Vietnam, the women's movement, non-violence, or even the Democratic Party.
  • A statement on the main questions to be addressed in the town meeting: what are the most pressing issues facing the nation? Where do we go from here?

III. Participation (35%): The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to engage in vigorous and intellectual debate about the pressing issues facing our nation during a key moment in U.S. history. There were a lot of voices actively advocating different directions for the nation in 1968 and our town meeting will hopefully bring them to life. To make this assignment successful, it's imperative that each and every one of you participate. The individual you are bringing to life has a unique perspective to offer, and if you are silent, we will not be able to understand fully the range of opinions and ideas shaping the debate in that year. If discussion is difficult for you, please make an appointment for extra help so we can work on some strategies.

IV. Works Cited (10%): Your works cited must be in proper MLA format. Use Ms. Westfall's handout for check out the works cited examples on this site.
